I had the opportunity to cover the 2024 Carolina Cup as a photojournalist where I participated in a weekend-long workshop with professional coaches. We had free reign to photograph during the event and access to over $100,00 worth of equipment donated by Canon. I practiced shooting sports photography with some of Canon’s finest lenses, including the EF 500mm f/4L IS II and the RF600mm f/4 L. I brought two cameras with me to the workshop: a Canon R and a Nikon Z7 II. I kept a long lens on the Canon camera, generally the 70-200 f/2.8, and a shorter lens on my Nikon camera, primarily a 50mm, to ensure that I was prepared at all times for whatever moments might happen. I had the honor of meeting many incredible people over the course of the weekend, including Bernard and Kate Dalton, the winners of the cup. My favorite part of the event was capturing the event both through visuals and spoken word, as I learned everyone’s unique stories and experiences with horse racing. Four of my photographs were published in The State along with the captions I wrote for them.
