The Strudel Shop is a pastry restaurant in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. The owner, Kevin Kelly, comes from a long line of pastry chefs dating back to his great-grandmother in Austria. His grandmother taught him how to cook the family recipes when he was little, and the love for pastry making has stuck with him since. Kelly is also extremely involved in the Columbia community. He enthusiastically supports local artists by displaying their work in his store and advertising local projects and fundraisers. He teaches pastry classes to friends and family, and mentors aspiring chefs. With Garnet and Black Magazine, I worked alongside writer Stephanie Roznowsli to do a local spotlight on the shop. When entering the shop, I was immediately met with a kind welcome and an invitation to join Kelly behind the counter to get a better angle for the photographs. I stayed for almost three hours watching Kelly work, meeting customers, and listening to his powerful story. Every pastry was made with so much attention and love, and it was more than present in the delicious final product. I wanted to capture the dedication Kelley had to both his craft and his community within this photostory.
