The Forbidden Fruit

Motion Design

The task for this project was to design an explainer video on an outdated South Carolina law. I worked with Desiree Solenberger to create an animation about a silly Spartanburg law that forbids eating watermelon in Magnolia Cemetery. We began the project by researching South Carolina laws and choosing the one we envisioned as a short animation. After looking through other explainer videos for inspiration, we settled on a collage-style animation using a combination of raster-based images cut out in photoshop and vector-based graphics I drew in Illustrator. We created storyboards depicting what our animation would look like, and then animated using a camera in After Effects to create a parallax effect. I primarily worked on the second half of the animation, starting with the train station scene. The tone of the animation is meant to be silly, yet informative. Our animation won a gold award in animation at the 2024 AEJMC VisCom Division’s Visual and Interactive Media Festival. Click the image below to watch my animation!
